Seam bowlers wanted!

Graham Webb,a stalwart over three decades and still our leading spinner, offers a chance for OC quick bowlers to rekindle their careers at Blackheath, a lovely club with strong contacts with Old Cranleighans going back to the 1970s

As some of you know, I play my club cricket at Blackheath, a very sociable club in a beautiful location near Cranleigh that has boasted many OC members over the years, including the president and the new captain of OCCC. About six years ago we had a slight wobble, dropped out of the Surrey Championship and almost folded, but we're back with a vengeance and now have well over 50 playing members, 160 juniors and a dozen qualified coaches. Having joined Div 4 of the I'Anson League in 2007 we have just been promoted into Division 1 for 2011, which brings me to my point ...

Are you, or do you know, a seam bowler who fancies a change next season? We have a great opportunity for somebody who perhaps isn't currently getting the new ball as often as he would like, or is tired of being labelled as a 2s bowler in a bigger club. This season our bowling attack relied on ageing, or very young and inexperienced seamers... plus a left-arm spinner who you may have come across on the Jubilee at some point... but I'Anson Division 1 will be a different kettle of fish and we need a new opening bowler. (We welcome all keen cricketers, of course, but the bowler is the main priority).

Much as we'd love to have them I'm not expecting to hear from the likes of Meaker, Crump or Cope, although all have played for us in their time, but speaking as somebody who has played everything from Cricketer Cup through Surrey Championship to the lowliest forms of village cricket I can tell you that I'Anson League Div 1 is a good competitive standard. It will keep me on my toes, but without the hard edge that you'll find in the Championship on a Saturday. The league is brilliantly run, with a full panel of umpires etc., and it's improving all the time as more and more good league players recognise the merit of playing on lovely grounds in the Guildford/Farnham/Cranleigh triangle. Sound like your kind of thing?

A personal approach is, of course, best but I think those seamers among you that I already know have loyalties elsewhere, or don't play on Saturdays, so I'm hoping this message will find somebody I don't know so well, or maybe a non-OC friend?

No need to commit every Saturday, a few games would be great. If this sounds like you, or just somebody you know, do drop me a line. I'd be delighted to hear from you and welcome you into the Blackheath family.
